It probably sounds counterintuitive to give away your book for free — the book you have most likely worked on for years, struggling to write at times. Why in the world would you give your book away for $0.00?
If you want your book’s message to get noticed, one way to do it is to be generous. Sure, you will lose sales for a few days, but what you gain (especially if you have other books for sale now or in the future) far outweighs the costs.
There are many reasons why this strategy can actually boost your bookselling numbers in the long run:
- You’re an unknown author. Congrats, you’re finally a published author! But, the hard part is yet to come: gaining attention for your book. By offering your book at no cost to readers, you’re allowing them to take no financial risk when exploring new authors. Take away every single excuse for readers not to own your book and give it to them for free. You just might land a dedicated reader who will mention you at their book club or on their blog. Plus, they can pass along your book to a friend or leave a book review on your website — all benefits to your writing career. Word-of-mouth can be incredibly effective.
Maybe you’re still not convinced that giving away your book for free is a sane marketing strategy.
